United States Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Luke C. Yepsen 08, of Kingwood, Texas died Dec. 14, 2006 due to injuries suffered from enemy action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Yepsen was assigned to 1st Tank Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Twentynine Palms, California.
Yepsen graduated from Kingwood High School in 2004. He was a mechanical engineering major at Texas A&M University until leaving to join the United States Marine Corps during his freshman year. After completing basic training in August 2006 ,Yepsen deployed to Iraq in October.
His family released a statement earlier this week, saying, Luke had a strong desire to serve the country. He wanted to fight for the things we hold dear and since he was strong and capable, and armed with his faith in God, he felt the need to protect us.
The family relayed that, he loved playing with his nieces and nephews and was loved deeply by them. He was a large, strapping young man with a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, but mostly he had a big heart.
Family and friends remembered Yepsen with a candlelight vigil of prayers and songs Friday, Dec. 15 in Kingwood. Services for Yepsen were held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 21 at St. Marthas Catholic Church in Kingwood. Yepsen is survived by his parents, Gary and Sheila Yepsen of Kingwood; brother Kyle Yepsen of Ft. Worth; and his fiance, Sandra Brumen.
